Baby Clothing
Congratulations! Your new baby has arrived. No doubt you have been busy the past nine months preparing the nursery and buying all of the items your little one will need. In the first few weeks of life your newborn will spend most of his/her time sleeping and one of the best outfits for newborns are little “Onesies”. Here is a guide to help you understand baby clothing and their sizes.
Size 0-3 months is up to 23” in height and up to 10 pounds. Size 3-6 months is for babies whose height is between 23-25” and whose weight is between 10 and 13 pounds. Size 6-9 months are for heights 25 27” and for weights between 13-16 pounds. Size 12 months are for heights between 27-29” and for weights between 16-20 pounds. Size 18 months are for heights between 29-31” and for weights between 20-24 pounds. Size 24 months are for heights between 31-33” and for weights between 24-28 pounds.
Planning for Baby - Consumer Issues
You may be amazed how fast your newborn will grow out of their newborn clothing. Many babies these days are well over nine pounds at birth, so you can see that the “small” or “newborn” clothing sizes will not last long for these children.
For the average sized baby, the “newborn” size should last for the first six weeks, however, don’t be surprised if your baby outgrows this size in a few weeks to a month. When shopping for the newborn, it is recommended to purchase between 4-8 onesies. Onesies are one piece bodysuits with snaps for easy diaper changing. They are soft and comfortable and provide great ease for the newborn baby who spends most of his/her time sleeping. You may also purchase between 4-8 one-piece nightgowns. Many of the newborn gowns have mitts or an extra piece of material that can fold over and serve as gloves to keep baby from scratching his/her self.
Keeping Babies Warm in Winter
Cotton undershirts are great and you may choose to purchase between 4 and 8 shirts. If your baby is born during cold weather, a snowsuit or heavy bunting bag will be required. You should purchase at least 1 sweater, and a couple bonnets or caps (lightweight bonnets are for spring and summer; heavier caps for autumn and winter).
Babies don’t need shoes- simply because they are not walking yet. Socks or booties will suffice until the walking stage and you may decide to purchase up to 10 pairs.
You may be astonished at how fast your little one outgrows their clothing, so remember to cherish every precious moment with your baby. They are only babies for a short while.
